Pre-production continues
on Salus
(11/03/2009) Work on the set of Salus is underway as
pre-production continues on the short film written by Shane
Kindschi. The title Salus is taken from the Latin translation of the
word "Salvation". The stop motion animated short will involve
1500 separate still images and have a similar look to such
past films as
The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, and
most recently Coraline. The film will be made
almost entirely by Shane, who will handle producing, directing,
cinematography, art direction, editing, and the actual animation
itself. Shown above, Shane carefully adds detail to the set,
which is constructed at 1/6 scale (12" = 72"). The scale chosen
is the same as other similar films and allows the human figure
armatures to be approximately 12" tall. Every part of the set
has been specially fabricated by Shane Kindschi. The wall paper
shown above, for example, is printed from a mold Shane has
carved by hand. Strips of paper are pre-tinted and then attached
to a drum, which is rolled over the mold over to apply paint to
the paper and 'print' the pattern. The set structure is
fabricated entirely from cardboard and construction foam.

New
works of art added to site
(10/01/2009) Shane has added a recent self portrait to the
Other Artwork section of his online portfolio. Shown above,
this is his first self portrait in more than 17 years. The
slogan "more cowbell" references one of the most memorable
Saturday Night Live skits of all time, which starred Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell and originally aired in 2000. The
satirical work uses the familiar style of recent political
propaganda.

Detail of the Rose Window of National Cathedral- Actual Size
Rendering of Washington
National Cathedral
(12/15/2007) Washington, DC is home to the World's sixth largest
Cathedral. In September 1907 work began on Washington National
Cathedral atop Mount St. Albans, the Districts highest point.
Commissioned in April 2007 to create a pen and ink rendering of
the Cathedral's West Facade, Shane Kindschi has been working
diligently for nearly 8 months now on his most detailed piece of artwork since Biltmore House in 1995. September 29, 2007 marked the
official centennial for Washington National Cathedral. As
demonstrated in the photographs above and below, Shane is widely
considered to be the foremost architectural illustrator in the
world today in the mediums of pencil and pen and ink.

Rarely seen while in
progress, the picture above shows a detail of the Saint Paul
Entrance of the Cathedral. Note that Saint Paul's right palm is
facing out, his eyes are closed, and his right foot and sandal
is barely protruding from the bottom of his garment. A drafting
pencil is used to create light guidelines before the final
inking begins. Shane's unique method uses a combination of heavy
and fine line weights along with a blend of hatching and
traditional stipple work. From beginning to end, the process
averages out to approximately 5 hours per square inch, and being
that it is in ink, erasing is not at all possible.
Prints of this work
will be available as soon as possible! You may pre-order the 18"
x 24" prints by emailing
information@kindschi.com . Once a press date is scheduled,
you will be contacted for shipping and billing information.

Cathedral Day
2007 Appearance in Washington, DC
(9/11/2007) Shane Kindschi will make a special appearance at
Washington National Cathedral for Cathedral Day 2007.
Cathedral Day, on September 29th, marks the official Centennial
date of the laying of the first stone by President Theodore
Roosevelt. Shane will be there to sign prints of his
illuminated cross, and prints of his drawing of National
Cathedral (shown in article below) can be pre-ordered at that
time.
Most importantly, Shane will exhibit his Original drawing of
National Cathedral and be on hand to meet the public. This will
mark the first time since 1995, that Shane has appeared in a
public event with one of his original works of art. The last
occasion in which an original was exhibited, was an appearance
for the Biltmore Estate Centennial in 1995. This is an extremely
rare appearance.

The Château
Frontenac in Quebec City, Quebec
Shane embarks on an
architectural tour of Canada
(8/17/07) In August, Shane spent time in Canada visiting
several locations with architectural merit, to consider
rendering in the near future. Quebec City was among his favorite
sites. There, he viewed the Château Frontenac within the walls
of the old City of Quebec. The Château was built by the same
turn of the century railroad developers that created the Banff
Springs Hotel in Alberta, Canada. Shane also visited the Capital
City of Ottawa and viewed the Parliament building, as well as
Montreal's Beaux Arts inspired St. Joseph's Oratory.
Additionally, Shane visited castles in the Thousand Islands,
toured Kingston, and hiked in the mountains around Lake Placid.
A few months ago, Shane spent time in Canada at Casa Loma in
Toronto and visited Niagara Falls. "I have a heart for Canada.",
Shane said," I have a deep personal connection with that country
because of the people I know there. It is a place I have
considered moving to." Shane plans to return to Canada in the
near future.

Shane produces short film "China"
(Orig.
Published 5/25/2005, Updated April 2007) A University of Southern California thesis film, written and directed by Jacob Hatley, and
produced by Sue Hugh, Eric Myerson, and Shane Kindschi is now
available for
purchase. As production designer for the 22 minute
short, Shane was in charge of fabricating and dressing
the sets and choosing visual elements of the film such
as props and costumes.
Shot in Randolph County, North Carolina, the production
filmed for nearly 3 weeks, with additional pick-ups in Los Angeles.
Shot in Black and White Kodak Film stock, the aspect
ratio of 2.35:1 was used to give the short a feeling of
the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1950s. For more
information, please visit the

for the film "China".

As production designer,
Shane has designed, built and dressed many sets. These photos show
